Timeless elegance and fascinating craftsmanship
For this unique dining table, I crafted a rustic 200 × 100 cm piece of kauri root. The tabletop is made from a 41,000-year-old piece of kauri wood and showcases the material’s natural form in a serene, expansive dining table design, lending the dining area elegance and exclusivity. Particularly striking are the organic tree edges and the vibrant surface of the root, which I deliberately preserved and meticulously crafted by hand.
The solid kauri tabletop of this dining table makes a strong statement with its wide, gently curving edges and striking root structure, yet its overall form remains clean and understated. I’ve finished the natural edges so that they reveal the root’s original movement while feeling pleasant and smooth to the touch. The natural form of the rare kauri wood remains visible without compromising its suitability for everyday use.
At the customer’s request, I partially reduced the size of a natural opening in the tabletop by inserting a piece of solid wood from the same root and filling the area with epoxy resin. This preserves the structure of the kauri root while giving the surface a smoother, more cohesive appearance. The epoxy resin finish provides additional protection and gives this extraordinary table a high-quality, satin-matte finish.
I assign each table its own unique serial number and a certificate of age—as is the case with this table, “ ” Unique No. 176. This ensures that the origin of the kauri wood can be traced, the individual piece is clearly documented, and it has its own story. This uniqueness and the fascinating beauty of these solid wood tables, crafted from precious solid kauri wood, make kauri tables exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces.
As a kauri dining table, this piece of furniture combines the powerful presence of an old tree root with the clean lines of an exclusive solid-wood table. The large tabletop, the organic tree edges, and the carved opening give the table its own unique character. For me, the combination of naturally grown solid wood, precise craftsmanship, and the table’s understated form is what makes this one-of-a-kind piece so special.
