Kauri burl wood for sculptural design objects
With Table 71, I showcase the unique appeal of kauri burl wood as a design object. The tabletop grew as a single piece and transitions seamlessly from the root area into the tree trunk. The solid wood table is supported by modern, delicate glass legs, and transparent epoxy resin inlays give it a contemporary, almost floating effect. The result is a designer table that combines natural character and modern form in a single piece.
Kauri burl wood is available only in small quantities compared to the tree’s trunk wood. Extracting the often impressively large roots from the swamp soil is a labor-intensive process, and working with the wood is also challenging because burl wood frequently contains loose, porous areas, cracks, and natural openings. This rarity makes burl wood tables highly sought-after, one-of-a-kind pieces with exceptional character.
I hand-finish the organic, natural edges so that they feel soft and pleasant to the touch. This allows the original shape of the solid wood to remain visible without appearing rough or unfinished. The solid wood table retains its natural character but is given a calm, high-quality finish that makes it recognizable as a piece of designer furniture.
The naturally formed openings in the wood are particularly fascinating. I stabilize and enhance them with high-quality epoxy resin, so that you can literally see right into the tabletop. This effect makes Table No. 71 a unique designer table: The surface isn’t flat, but appears spatial, vibrant, and three-dimensional.
Despite its rustic material, this designer table has a modern and timeless look. In a subtly decorated setting, this solid-wood table stands out exceptionally well and often becomes an extravagant focal point and a topic of conversation in its own right. The combination of thousand-year-old kauri wood, delicate glass legs, and epoxy resin makes it a modern piece of furniture that not only serves a functional purpose but also visibly defines the space.
Each table is a genuine original created by me and is assigned its own unique serial number. It also comes with a certificate of age for the kauri wood used. This ensures that not only is the table’s design unique, but its origin is also documented and traceable.
This solid wood table looks like an artistic design piece, yet its high-quality finish also makes it a sturdy dining table suitable for everyday use. For me, that’s the special appeal of this unique table: it showcases the incomparable expressiveness of kauri burl wood, while remaining a functional table with a lasting presence.
