Limited-edition, one-of-a-kind pieces featuring a rare combination of materials
The natural wood table, Unique No. 114, features a 240 × 120 cm solid wood tabletop that is carved entirely from a single piece of old kauri root. The tabletop features extensive bark growth and original golden-colored amber. These features are not added but are part of the natural material, which makes the table so special as a collector’s item. A modern, delicate glass base makes the tabletop appear to float.

Kauri wood is a limited natural resource with a traceable origin, age, and documented history. Swamp Kauri, found in New Zealand, has been preserved in swamp and peat bog areas over a very long period of time; the New Zealand government officially estimates this period to be between approximately 800 and 60,000 years. This rarity and its non-renewable origin make solid Kauri wood attractive for high-quality furniture and as a tangible asset.

Living kauri trees are protected in New Zealand; only trunks and root sections that have been preserved in the ground for a long time are used for furniture making. The material is therefore not a traditional renewable resource, but rather a natural material that has grown over time and is available in limited quantities. This scarcity is a key aspect of its value.
More about the origin of subfossil kauri wood

For this table, the origin is not merely claimed but documented. According to the Leibniz Laboratory for Age Determination and Isotope Research in Kiel, the kauri root slab shown here dates from 2275–2040 B.C.; the manufacturer’s inventory also includes slabs that are 2,900, 3,700, 28,000, and 47,000 years old. An age certificate provides this information to the customer upon delivery.

Amber is fossilized tree resin: it forms from resin from the kauri tree that drips into the root and solidifies there over the course of millennia. In the tabletop, this natural process becomes visible through my careful preparation of the resin and amber sections, which I then stabilize with epoxy resin. The result is an elegant surface with multiple visible layers that allow you to literally look into the tabletop—a feature that is unique internationally compared to other woods.

The table can be restored if necessary, as the solid wood tabletop is thick enough to be refinished in the future. This ensures that the shape and surface quality are preserved over the long term—a key characteristic for furniture to be considered a sound investment. High-quality furniture made with fine materials and meticulous craftsmanship is therefore regarded as a future heirloom in the exclusive world of luxury.

Each table is crafted individually. Before working with the wood, I dry it to about 8% moisture content to minimize the risk of future warping, twisting, or cracking. With the appropriate surface treatment, the tabletop becomes moisture-resistant and can withstand daily use, even as a heavily used dining table. This combination of practicality and durable craftsmanship is essential if a piece of furniture is to be not only beautiful but also of lasting value.

Each Kauri tabletop is individually handcrafted to the customer’s specifications and takes on its own unique shape, appearance, and finish. Special materials can also be incorporated into the natural openings upon request. This results in one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be replicated and possess both sentimental and material value.
More about how I work with kauri wood

Before shipment, each piece of Kauri furniture is assigned its own unique serial number. This number makes the piece one-of-a-kind, clearly identifiable, and reinforces its status as a documented, unique item. This is precisely what matters when it comes to an investment: not only is the material rare, but the design and craftsmanship also exist in no other version.

A Kauri natural wood table has the impact of a unique natural work of art and can be used every day—as a sturdy dining table, an exclusive conference table, or a living room table. It remains a tangible asset with a sculptural presence in the room and is not a mass-produced item. This combination of everyday practicality, limited availability, and documented provenance makes the piece an intriguing investment opportunity.

It is not just the wood that retains its value here, but the entire combination: rare kauri burl, original natural characteristics, a certificate of age, a unique identification number, custom craftsmanship, and the option for future restoration. A piece like this is not a fleeting trend item, but an extraordinary piece of furniture with a lasting identity.
Learn more about Kauri tables as an investment

This comparison clearly shows how the appearance of a kauri tabletop changes as a result of processing. In its raw state, the solid wood still appears understated, with its grain patterns and color gradients largely hidden. It is only through precise finishing—revealing the grain, bark, and amber—and the targeted use of epoxy resin that multiple visible layers emerge in the wood. Thus, an unassuming raw slab is transformed into an extraordinary natural wood table with depth, clarity, and a presence that makes the character of an investment tangible.
