One-of-a-kind Table No. 191 made from 3,700-year-old kauri burl wood

For one-of-a-kind table No. 191, I crafted a 3 x 1-meter solid kauri burl slab from a single piece of wood. The wood is 3,700 years old and features a very distinctive grain: broad light-colored wood sections, dark areas of bark, naturally formed root zones, and inlaid amber spots. The extraordinary interplay of surface, depth, and natural tension is what makes this Kauri design table so special.

In this table, the individual wooden sections resemble islands in the sea, giving it the distinctive appearance of a “river table.” The light-colored sections of the tabletop lie calmly side by side, with dark areas—the preserved bark —running between them. The transparent epoxy resin forms the river’s course between these zones, allowing the natural grain of the fascinating solid wood to remain clearly visible.

Bark, root branches, and natural structure

I deliberately left the bark visible on this slab. Added to this are fine root branches and dark natural inclusions, which give the table its distinctive natural character. This combination makes the designer table visually striking and unique.

Amber visibly carved into the kauri wood

The striking tabletop features prominent amber inclusions, which I have highlighted with transparent, high-gloss polished epoxy resin. This ensures that these areas remain visible and serve as an extravagant focal point. The old wood, the bark, and the amber together form a rare combination of materials that would be nearly impossible to achieve with other types of wood.
