For my designer tables, I work with solid burl wood and tree trunk wood. Both types have their own unique grain patterns. Burl wood often has an organic, lively, and dynamic appearance, while tree trunk wood can exhibit a calmer and more defined grain. I use high-quality epoxy resin to stabilize embedded bark and amber, creating multiple visible layers within the tabletop. This preserves the wood’s original form while ensuring the table remains durable and suitable for everyday use as a moisture-resistant dining table.
Kauri design tables straddle the line between furniture and unconventional artwork, between function and sculptural impact. That is precisely what makes them so appealing: they are practical, yet remain distinctly unique in their form, material, and presence. Kauri wood enhances this effect because its distinctive grain, natural edges, amber-colored areas, and the depth of the material create an almost curated aesthetic.
Each designer table is crafted as a one-of-a-kind piece. The selection, proportions, and size of the raw material play a central role. Each table is assigned its own unique serial number and comes with its own certificate of age. This underscores the character of these pieces as traceable, one-of-a-kind works. Custom-made does not merely mean the right size, but a form that harmonizes with the material. The result is a unique piece of furniture that impresses as much in terms of its fit and function as it does with its aesthetic appeal.
For me, design is an ongoing process. I work with prototypes, surface treatments, and various resin systems to find the best possible solution for each type of solid wood. What matters is not the technique for its own sake, but the result: a serene, durable, and cleanly crafted table with a striking material presence.
