Huge root for artistic tables, here still in New Zealand

After a 47,000-year-old root block from New Zealand measuring 330 x 200 x 180 cm and grown in one piece arrived at my workshop in Goch in 2016, we cut individual table tops from it. I use them to make artistic natural wood designer tables with a fascinating appearance.

Unusual designer tables made from inconspicuous wood

Cutting the individual table tops to size

First the large root block was divided into 3 parts, then we began to cut out each table top individually. After each slab, the saw had to be sharpened or replaced, so it sometimes took us up to an hour to cut one slab. We had to refuel 2 - 3 times for each slab. We cut from morning to night for 4 days.

Up to one hour of cutting for each tabletop made from the tough burl wood

Patrick Herrmann from Stuttgart provided me with valuable help with his mobile sawmill. He took on the task very patiently and didn't despair when the saw had to be sharpened again and again or the chain had to be replaced.

The root table top no. 8, measuring 330 x 120 x 12 cm, grew in one piece after I finished it in summer 2020. Now the beautiful grain of the Kauri root wood with ingrown bark and original gold-colored amber from the ancient Kauri tree can be seen in the table top.

Drying the Kauri table tops

Storage of the table tops

It was very strenuous but also a great event, during which we worked up a lot of sweat. We cut a total of 41 table tops from the 3.30 x 2.00 x 1.80 m kauri root block. Here it lay neatly stacked for 2 years and was able to pre-dry in the air. In 2018, I started with the processing.

Artificial drying before processing the wooden tables

2 table tops are in my drying chamber and are artificially and gently dried down to 7 - 8 % wood moisture before processing. This is an important step to ensure that the finished Kauri wooden table does not crack or warp later on at the customer's premises.

Only then do I begin to process the table tops into unique and unusual dining tables, conference tables or designer tables according to the customer's wishes.
