How to Properly Work with Kauri Wood Tables

Special processing to straighten warped Kauri table tops

After drying, significant natural forces and stresses can develop in the wood of large tree trunk slabs. I use a special processing technique to release these forces and straighten the tabletop as a result.

This way, I only need to remove a very small amount of the valuable solid kauri wood during the subsequent processing, and the panel retains its thickness.

The photo shows just how important it is to dry the large, solid kauri tabletops to about 7% moisture content before machining them. The straightedge on the tabletop indicates the warping.

Warping and cracking of tabletops are natural processes and would occur after one to two years at the customer’s home if the tabletop had not been properly dried beforehand. After drying, I begin the finishing process by straightening the tabletop. This minimizes the risk of subsequent warping and deformation of the tabletop at the customer’s home.
